Email From Simon Hughes MP

TEXT:
Thank you for your e-mail. Over the past few days I have been really
encouraged that so many people agree that our political system needs
fundamental change and I agree with you that electoral reform is a key part
of this. I have argued, campaigned and worked for major constitutional,
electoral and political reform all my adult life - especially so that we can
have fair votes and a representative parliament as soon as possible. I have
also for a long time been a member of the Electoral Reform Society
(coincidentally based in my constituency) and active in the Campaign for
Fair Votes.
Obviously, the negotiations which are now going on between Liberal Democrats
and the Conservatives, and now the Liberal Democrats and the Labour Party
are delicate and complicated, but I am clear that this is a great
opportunity for Liberal Democrats to change the political system for
generations to come. I have met formally and informally with my local party
members and supporters and talked with others, and many other people have
written to me, phoned me and sent me emails about this subject since last
Friday. I am trying to take all these views into account in the discussions
and meetings I have had and will continue to have with my colleagues who are
the other Liberal Democrat members of parliament.
I can assure you that I and my colleagues are doing all that we can to
ensure that as soon as possible the British people have a voting system
for our UK parliament which truly gives every citizen a fair vote and gives
Britain a representative parliament at last.
I hope that this has clarified my position and thank you very much again for
writing.
Best Wishes
Simon

Subject: Please Make Our Voting Fair!
From:
Anna *******
Hello,
I'm writing to you because I know that Liberal Democrats are currently in
discussions with both the Conservative and Labour Parties regarding possible
coalition government.
I ask you, please, stick to your guns on electoral reform.
If there's one thing this election result shows, it's that we can't go on
like this. I know you've had a disappointing couple of days, but millions
who cast their votes in hope will be disappointed if the chance of electoral
reform slips away.
I live in a super safe Labour seat so my vote, ultimately, did not count. I
voted because it's my duty to vote and I believe passionately in the power
of democracy but our system is terribly undemocratic as it is.
I want to thank you for making the case for PR as a member of the Lib Dems
and hope you'll continue to do so on behalf of all of us who voted during
this election but whose votes were not valued as they should be.
Thank you.
I wish you very well,
Anna ********
